Industrial Electricians do plans, installations, inspections, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting and repair of all types of industrial electrical and electronic controls that are vital to the operation of commercial and industrial businesses to include all equipment or components directly or indirectly exposed to electric power such as motors, generators, pumps, lighting systems and associated electrical and electronic controls.

Industrial electricians are usually employed in an industrial plant of some kind: electrical construction firms; primary steel producers; motor vehicle manufacturers; motor vehicle parts manufacturers; electrical power companies; and, mining companies, to name some important industries.

Meanwhile, industrial electricians who install and repair robotics and other computerized control equipment, which is increasingly becoming common in auto parts and other manufacturing sectors, can enhance their job opportunities.

The Best Industrial Electrician

An industrial electrician’s type of work varies depending on the size of the company, the demands of the company’s services or the load of the task.   Generally however, the best – and certainly most competent - industrial electrician possess the following specific job related knowledge and skills – the ability to:

  1. do precision work; read and interpret drawings, blueprints and electrical code specifications for layout and installation of electrical equipment
  2. install, examine, replace or repair electrical wiring, receptacles, switch boxes, conduits, feeders, case assemblies, lighting fixtures and other electrical components; also, electrical motors, generators, industrial storage batteries and various electrical control systems.
  3. test electrical and electronic equipment and components as well as to maintain, repair, install and test switchgears, transformers, switchboard meters, regulators and reactors for continuity, current voltage and resistance
  4. install, maintain, repair and test electrical motors, generators, industrial storage batteries, low voltage distribution systems and hydraulic and pneumatic electrical control systems as well as micro processor-based systems
  5. Install and maintain communication data systems, emergency stand-by systems, heating, ventilation and climate control systems
  6. calibrate instrumentation devices
  7. determine the best repair solutions, conduct preventive maintenance programs and keep maintenance records
  8. understand and practice industry standards for installation, repairs and safety
  9. and, proficiency in use of computer-based equipment
